There’s nothing worse than lighting a candle you’re excited about… and wondering if it’s doing what it’s supposed to do.
If you’ve ever thought “Is this scent strong enough?” or “Am I burning this right?” — you’re not alone. The good news is that a few small tweaks can make a huge difference in how your candle performs, how long it lasts, and how much scent fills your space.
Here are three simple tips to help you get the very best burn (and throw) from your candle — plus a quick myth-buster on scent strength at the end.
The first couple of burns matter more than most people realize.
If you only burn a candle for 20–30 minutes right out of the gate, the wax (and scent) never gets a chance to open up properly.
When you light your candle for the first time, aim to let it burn 2–3 hours, or until the melted wax reaches the edges of the jar. This helps prevent tunneling and allows the fragrance to fully bloom.
A long wick doesn’t mean a stronger candle — it usually means the opposite.
Before each burn, trim your wick to about ¼ inch. This keeps the flame steady, prevents excess soot, and allows the candle to burn at the temperature it was designed for.
A properly trimmed wick helps the wax melt evenly, which means the fragrance disperses more consistently throughout the room.
Because our candles are made without fillers or overpowering additives, they perform best when the wick is kept at the right length.
Not all scents behave the same way in every space.
Some fragrances shine in smaller rooms, while others really come alive in open areas. If a scent feels subtle at first, try burning it in a different space before deciding how you feel about it.
A cozy office, bedroom, or reading nook can highlight notes that might feel more understated in a large, open living room.
We focus on candles that fill a space gradually and continue to linger, so the scent is still part of the room even after the flame is out.
That’s why burn time, room size, and proper care make such a noticeable difference.
This is one of the most common concerns we hear, and it’s usually not a fragrance issue at all.
In most cases, scent throw improves after:
The first 1–2 full burns
The wax has melted edge-to-edge
The candle has been burned long enough to fully warm
Many high-quality candles are designed this way on purpose. Instead of blasting fragrance immediately, they release scent gradually and evenly, creating a cleaner burn and a more natural experience.
“It smells wonderful but what I'm really impressed with is how long the smell lingers. I burn it for 30 minutes or so and enjoy the smell in the room for at least several hours.”
— Jeff Bicer
If you want a candle that burns clean, lasts longer, and creates an atmosphere that stays with you, these small habits make all the difference.
